The Law Society In Parliament
As the body tasked with representing the interests of solicitors, representatives of the Law Society of England and Wales have regular meetings with ministers, parliamentary committees, MPs and other parliamentarians. The Society also hosts and attends various events in and around parliament.
We will now be posting on the TVLS website regular summaries of these meetings and events. The first update, covering the period from 29 January to 9 February, is below.
- The Society released a policy paper on the impact of a CETA style deal on legal services, noting that it would essentially be a 'no deal' scenario for the sector. The publication can be found here. The paper will also be circulated to relevant ministers and parliamentarians.
- On Tuesday 29 January Law Society president Joe Egan met with David Hanson MP, a member of the Justice Select Committee, and Hywel Willams MP, a member of the Exiting the EU Select Committee.
- On Thursday 1 February Joe Egan met Rushanara Ali MP, member of the Treasury Select Committee.
- Also on Thursday 1 February, the Law Society's Head of International, Mickael Laurans, gave oral evidence to the EU Internal Market Sub Committee on Brexit: non-financial services.
- The Law Society co-sponsored a parliamentary reception with other members of the Professional and Business Services Council. The speakers included Lord Henley, Parliamentary Under Secretary at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), and Robin Walker MP from the Department for Exiting the EU.
- Joe Egan hosted a Carey Street dinner discussion on the government's industrial strategy. Key guests included Glen Hall, special adviser at BEIS, and Peter King, chief legal adviser at the Treasury.
- On Monday 5 February, Joe Egan and Law Society chief executive Paul Tennant met the Lord Chancellor and discussed Brexit, the LASPO review, and court modernisation.
- On Tuesday 6 February Joe Egan met with Charlie Elphicke MP, member of the Commons Treasury Select Committee. He also met with Lord Cromwell, co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Fair Business Banking and Finance and member of the House of Lords EU Select Committee and its Justice Sub-Committee.
- On Wednesday 7 February Christina Blacklaws, Law Society vice president, spoke at an event on 'AI and future legal careers' at Southbank University. The event was organised by the South London Law Society.
