MoJ Avoids Barristers' Escalation

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) have successfully headed-off an escalation in the ongoing dispute between barristers and the government by increasing the Advocates Graduate Fees Scheme (AGFS) legal aid budget by £15m.

The dispute - triggered by revisions to the AGFS - has lasted for over two months now, and has seen barristers refusing to take new instructions. In reaction to the MoJ's concession, Law Society president Joe Egan said We’re pleased the Ministry of Justice has recognised the argument there needs to be proper funding in the criminal justice system, as evidenced by the proposed release of additional funds for legally aided work.
