Ministry of Justice Scraps 500% Rises
The Financial Times (paywalled), Guardian, Independent, The Times (The Brief), Law Society Gazette have all reported that the government is reversing 500% rises in fees for UK immigration and asylum tribunals following pressure from the Law Society and others.
A wider review of tribunal fees will now take place. In the meantime the MoJ will apply fees at the previous levels and make refunds to those who have paid under the new scheme.
In a statement, Law Society Chief Executive, Catherine Dixon, said:
The Law Society vigorously opposed the fee increases because equal access to justice is more important than income generation when it comes to setting court and tribunal fees. We note the government is now embarking on a wider review of tribunal fees which we welcome and we will be monitoring that process carefully.
