Law Society Brexit Update
Since the EU referendum result, the Law Society has been gathering members' views on the impact that leaving the EU could have on both their clients and their businesses. The Society has held roundtable events across England and Wales, discussions with their expert legal policy committees and with members of their Brexit taskforce. Both the policy committees and the Brexit taskforce are committed to helping the government with discussions and tasks in plans to withdraw from the EU.
The Society's priorities have been submitted to the government and they have held multiple meetings with key ministers, officials and parliamentarians. They will continue to have regular talks with the government, parliamentarians and wider stakeholders to highlight these priorities.
The Society's new report, Brexit and the Law, follows on from two previous reports they published previously which looked at the potential effect of Brexit on the legal sector. The first was an independent assessment of its economic impact. The second report examined the impact of the EU on England and Wales as a global legal services centre and jurisdiction of choice. Further to publishing their report, the president, Robert Bourns, met with the attorney general and the solicitor general. They discussed the impact of Brexit on the legal sector, pro bono and public legal education.
The president hosted a roundtable with senior stakeholders from City firms, to provide an update on the Society's Brexit activities so far and to promote their new report.
