Driving Offences and Penalties Consultation

Driving Offences and Penalties Consultation

The Law Society has responded to a Ministry of Justice (MoJ) consultation on driving offences and penalties relating to causing death and serious injury.

While the Society agreed with the government that maintaining the objective tests of careless and dangerous driving in the offences, and that creating a new offence of careless driving causing serious injury would fill gap in the scope of these offences, they disagreed that the maximum penalty for causing death by dangerous driving should be increased from 14 years' imprisonment to life.
