100 Years Since Women Became People
In a recent piece for the Law Society Blog, the Society's vice president, Christina Blacklaws, highlights the somewhat surprising fact that - until the 1919 Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act - case law had found that the entire sex of women failed to fall within the definition of 'persons'. It was not until the passing of this act that women were able to become lawyers for the first time.
The piece goes on to discuss the First 100 Years project, and ambitious video history documenting the journey of women in the legal profession from 1919 to the present day.
